Ari set six alarms for the next morning, determined not to sleep in again. But holy shit was it early. After Gid left her hotel room, Ari tossed and turned in a restless sleep all night. Damn him.

She arrived in Julia’s suite, where they were doing hair and makeup all morning, eating breakfast and drinking Bellinis before driving forty-five minutes in a party bus to the coast. There was a little inn-turned-wedding venue at the cliffs that would serve as their base for their ceremony.

The morning passed in a blur of color palettes and make-up brushes and by the end of it, Ari had a long, intricate plait that lay over her shoulder, an understated smoky eye, and deep red lips to match her emerald green velvet long sleeve dress.

Despite the flurry of activity in the bridal suite, Ari’s thoughts kept drifting back to Gid. Soon, they’d be celebrating Christmas by themselves on the Christmas tree farm surrounded by fir trees and pygmy goats. She’d definitely be lying if she said she wasn’t looking forward to some alone time with her best friend. And after last night…she had no idea what to expect.

But that’s what he was: her best friend. And best friends didn’t have unexpected sexual encounters. Especially around weddings when everyone was already feeling so vulnerable. It was just like Ari to mess up something as straightforward as her friendship with Gid. Her best friend. She wanted to keep him that way.

Right?

“Earth to Ari.” Julia waved a hand in front of Ari’s face.

“You look perfect, Juju,” Ari said, focusing on the bride.

She really did. Even as Julia rolled her eyes at the nickname, her cheeks flushed peach, highlighted by softly glowing makeup. Everything about her look screamed effortless, minimal beauty, from her low, knotted bun to her silk chiffon dress. The floor length gown had the same peach undertones as her skin and was topped with sheer, beaded long sleeves that ended in silk bows mid-forearm. Her magically clean leather flats peeked out from underneath.

“Thank you.” She handed Ari a cocktail. “Here, drink with me.”

“Are you sure?” Ari laughed.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Julia waved a hand between them as if to say, I’m so over your drunk ass spilling two Bellinis on me at brunch the other day. “I’m really happy you’re here.”

“Of course I am. Where else would I be?”

“I just know with school and your career and everything you have a lot on your plate.” Julia gave Ari a small smile.

Ari’s stomach plunged. School. Career. Say either word three times fast to summon a stomach ache. Except that no one, not even Gid, knew the trouble that she was in back at Everdale College.

“Ha,” Ari laughed, tossing her head ironically to one side, “yep they sure do keep us busy over there.”

Julia sighed and turned toward the window, pulling aside the curtain. “I know it was risky for us to plan a seaside elopement for the dead of winter, but the weather turned out more perfect than I could have imagined.
